What happens if you cheat on Liara with Thane? ›

Liara will be suspicious of you if you go back to Thane, and relations between you will cool for a while, but eventually, events will conspire to end that relationship permanently. At that point, Liara will be open to taking you back.

I agree with everyone else though: male shep + jack and femshep + Garrus are your best bet for the truest renegade romance. Personally, if you\re going renegade then pick the sweetest romances and then break up with them, it can be devastating.

Re: ME2: Liara does not count as a romance

She's not part of the Normandy crew in ME2 and neither is Ash or Kaidan. Staying true to them in ME2 will not unlock an achievement.

If Shepard becomes involved with Allers while also pursuing a relationship with Liara, the latter will subsequently announce that she knows about the affair and does not appreciate the commander "playing games" with her.

If Garrus dies there is absolutely no replacement and you have an empty spot on your squad. Also Tali, while nobody takes her place on your squad, is replaced plotwise with Admiral Shala'raan Vas Tombay.

Garrus and Tali behave very differently to the other romance options in the game, and that's why it's much better for you and for them if you leave them alone. If you opt not to romance either of them, they will eventually begin to romance each other, in one of the best squadmate subplots the trilogy gets to tell.

They are both popular characters but are also sort of contraversial as well. Personally I'd go with Liara. I feel like she has the best character progression/development and possibly the best romance in the game but Tali is cool too.

Directly after Thane's death, you can go lock in a relationship with Liara on the Citadel. No one brings up the relationship with him, and he doesn't even grant the Paramour achievement, so it doesn't make you feel guilty about cheating either.

Once Shepard locks in the romance during their Game Night, she will not be able to romance anyone else.

After you complete all four Mission Worlds and return to the Citadel, the Normandy will be grounded and Liara will appear to comfort Shepard. Unless you consistently pick Renegade options here, your romance with Liara will be Locked In.
